In December, UMO will shed light on the history of big band music by offering a wide look into the history of swing. The swinging concert is planned by Kirmo Lintinen who will also be the conductor, pianist and presenter of the night. Sami Pitkämö will be UMO’s vocalist.

Joyful swing, which evolved during the first half of the 1930s, was the rock ‘n’ roll of the time, and during its heyday, jazz became very popular music. The most famous big bands of the era belonged to Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Jimmie Lunceford.

- “Swing can vary in its style, and the concert audience will hear both gentle ballads and fast-paced, entertaining classics,” Kirmo Lintinen says.

Sami Pitkämö shines on stage like the audience-inciting crooners of the 1940s, good examples of whom were Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Dean Martin. Performing as the big band vocalists and appealing to audiences’ emotions, crooners used to sing their way to many people’s hearts.

What is swing?

- Big band music started to develop in the early half of the 1920s, and its pioneers included, in particular, Benny Goodman and Count Basie.

- The style that originated from the US flourished in 1935–45 and spread fast across the world, becoming an international music genre.

- Big bands featured vocalists in concert, but vocalists became real stars only later on. During the swing days, big bands and their leaders were in the main role.

The age limit for the event is 18.
