Vocal ensemble Club For Five and UMO Jazz Orchestra will be giving new performances of their successful 2011 concert, ‘A New Take on Tango’, in spring 2012. The spectacular programme features evergreen tangos by Unto Mononen and Toivo Kärki in new, sometimes surprising versions.
The concert is a tribute to two legendary Finnish songwriters and presents a new perspective on their music as a highly unconventional tango ensemble – a big band with a five-part vocal ensemble – combine Finnish tangos with anything from film music, jazz and disco to rock music. The inventive arrangements, mostly by Marzi Nyman and Pessi Levanto, take these quintessentially Finnish tunes on a trip around the world, from America to Argentina and from Cuba to Portugal.
“We have been wanting to do a concert of Finnish tangos for a long time, as we have a deep respect for the life’s work of Unto Mononen and Toivo Kärki. Both we and UMO had an interest in fashioning these tangos into new versions,” says Jouni Kannisto, who sings with Club For Five.

A favourite with concert audiences for years, Club For Five are a vocal ensemble formed by Maija Sariola, Jouni Kannisto, Tuukka Haapaniemi, Eeppi Ursin and Juha Viitala. They released their latest album, Ihmiset (People) in October 2011.
