Conductor Kari Heinilä
On Saturday 21 April, UMO will be giving the world premiere of composer Mikko Heiniö’s ninth piano concerto at the Tampere Biennale. Written for UMO and pianist Kirmo Lintinen, Nonno – Concerto no. 9 for amplified piano and big band explores memories from the composer’s youth, including echoes of blues rhythms which he enjoyed in his teens.
Mikko Heiniö is one of Finland’s most distinguished contemporary composers. His piano concertos typically feature ensembles unusual in the classical music tradition.
The concert also includes a vocal work by young composer Outi Tarkiainen entitled Metsän hiljaisuudessa (In the stillness of the forest), with jazz vocalist Aili Ikonen as soloist. Written for UMO and Aili Ikonen, the work was premiered in Helsinki on 18 March 2010.
