On November UMO Jazz Orchestra offers open auditions for all sections of big band in Helsinki Music Centre:

- Monday the 7th of Nov. , Black Box: saxophones at 10.30 am and 1.00 pm
- Wednesday the 9th of Nov., Sonore: trombones at 10.30 am and trumpets at 1.00 pm
- Thursday the 10th of Nov., Black Box: rhythm section instruments (piano, bass, drums) at 10.30 am and 1.00 pm

In the audition, one or more candidates at a time will play with UMO Jazz Orchestra as part of a section.

The music for the audition consists of UMO’s standard repertoire which includes big band classics and contemporary Finnish compositions. Sheet music for the parts will be provided in advance. The candidates’ abilities for improvising solos and playing a prima vista can also be tested in the audition.

The double CD includes three classic UMO albums from the 1970′s.

Included in the special edition double CD are A Good Time Was Had By All (1976), Umophilos (1979) and Thad Jones, Mel Lewis & UMO (1978), which is the only Finnish jazz album ever to receive a Grammy nomination (it was nominated in 1979 in the category ”Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band”). Music from these classic albums will also be played at a jubilee concert dedicated to Esko Linnavalli (13.10. at Savoy-theater).

The double CD will be in stores in October 12.

Mum and dad push her to Slum­ber­land but the excit­ing book that excudes magic sweeps her along again and again. A, B, C and so on - what are the ani­mals behind the letters?

Ryt­mi­hyrrä — Eläin­lauluja lap­sille (Rhythm Ant  —  Ani­mal Songs for kids) is the  Swedish/Finnish-language children’s pro­duc­tion that fea­tures Emma Salokoski on vocals. Behind the ani­mal songs are the composer-conductor Kirmo Lin­ti­nen and Mayvor Fridlund-Lintinen who has writ­ten the lyrics for the songs.

- In 2002  –  2006 Mayvor and I wrote 28 Swedish-language ani­mal songs for a book project.  Now I have arranged 18 of these songs for UMO and Emma Salokoski, says Kirmo Lintinen.

The direc­tion and dra­maturgy of the con­cert is by Chris­t­ian Lind­blad, known as a film and the­atre direc­tor, scriptwriter and actor. In the new mil­len­nium Lind­blad has writ­ten scripts for and directed many drama­tised music pro­duc­tions (includ­ing Markus Fagerudd’s children’s opera, Gaia, for the Finnish National Opera in 2001).  Behind Rytmyra’s visual look and set design is the visual artist Pir­jetta Bran­der.
