UMO’s tribute to Stevie Wonder was a smash hit in autumn 2011. Conductor Mikko Pettinen leads an all-star soul vocalist cast in a cross-section of Stevie Wonder’s work, featuring: the consummate master Sami Saari; Janna Hurmerinta, one of Finland’s most skilled female vocalists; the sensational new soul talent Heini Ikonen; and Antti Kleemola, an old hand familiar for instance from many national qualifiers for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Internationally acclaimed soprano Helena Juntunen joins UMO for an intimate Easter concert. The programme has been planned by conductor Kirmo Lintinen and includes some of his own work. Established as a UMO tradition, the Silent Music concert features solemn, unamplified music in the spirit of Easter, including familiar beautiful classical numbers and inspiring new arrangements of African-American spirituals.

On Saturday 21 April, UMO will be giving the world premiere of composer Mikko Heiniö’s ninth piano concerto at the Tampere Biennale. Written for UMO and pianist Kirmo Lintinen, Nonno – Concerto no. 9 for amplified piano and big band explores memories from the composer’s youth, including echoes of blues rhythms which he enjoyed in his teens.
